Floods have spread across the nation one city at a time…or shall we say MANY cities at a time. In this country, flash floods are the most common severe weather disaster.
In honor of FEMA’s National Preparedness Month (NPM), here are five flood preparedness tips for you and your family.
- #1. Create a Plan – It’s extremely important to have a family emergency plan. Take some time to rehearse and review it with your family. To make this process easier, Paul Davis has a Get a Plan form you can download at the link at the end of this post.
- #2. Develop an Emergency Kit – Here are a few of the items you should include: a first aid kit, water (a gallon of water per person for at least 3 days), singal whistle, battery-powered radio, moist towelettes, dust masks, garbage bags, pliers, and local maps.
- #3. Clean Your Gutters – Clear debris from your gutters; to help water flow, it is vital that the drains are not clogged.
- #4. Look at Flood Maps – Know your area and secure proper insurance. It’s important to know if you reside in a flood zone. To look at flood maps in Lafayette, click on the link at the end of the post.
- #5. Understand Flood Vocabulary – Do you know what the difference is between a flood watch and a flood warning? When a flood watch is issued, it means that there is a chance a flood will happen in your area. A flood warning means that a flood is imminent and that you need to take action.
